The Basilica stands on the site of a "Domus ecclesiae", transformed
into a Christian basilica by Pope Miltiades

The oldest basilica dates back to the time of Sixtus III, it is believed
to have been begun around AD 420.

The present basilica is the reconstruction of the one half-destroyed by
